A native of London, Ontario, Brenda Joyce started piano lessons in the Suzuki Method at the age of six. She obtained a Bachelor of Music Theory at the University of Toronto and her Master’s in Collaborative Piano Performance from Western University in London, Ontario, where she became a high-demand accompanist and coach for several studios. She has studied with Ronald Turini, Kathryn Tremills and Martin Katz. Her wide variety of experience includes piano teaching, music coaching, ballet pianist, music director, harpsichordist, session musician, Broadway pit musician and choral accompanist. Brenda moved to Halifax in August 2016 and is now on staff at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts as a ballet pianist, and is also an accompanist for Halifax’s All-City Music Choir, Soundtrax. She will be performing on harpsichord at the Halifax Summer Opera Festival in 2017 for the Cavalli opera L’Egisto.

Originally from Fredericton NB, Karen received her Bachelor of Music degree from Mount Allison University in Sackville NB, having studied piano with Dr. Janet Thom Hammock. At the completion of her first degree, Karen moved to Boston where she studied piano privately with Dr. Henrica Bordwin, of the American Schubert Institute. Upon returning to Canada, she studied music history at the University of Toronto, and went on to receive her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance (Accompaniment and Chamber Music) from the University of Western Ontario in London ON, having studied with Peter Smith.

Karen continues to be in demand as a collaborative pianist. She has accompanied choirs and soloists in the Maritimes, Ontario, Boston, and England. She has accompanied the St FX Community Choir of Antigonish and has accompanied a variety of school choirs locally and on tour. She is presently the accompanist for the Carillon Singers of New Glasgow. Karen enjoys her work as a collaborative pianist, and is very happy to be able to accompany students for their auditions for university, to accompany competitors at the local and provincial festivals, and those doing Conservatory exams. Karen has also worked with the NS Youth Choir.

While working as a church musician for many years, Karen is presently the Director of Music at Trinity United Church in New Glasgow, NS where she facilitates the music for contemporary and traditional services, playing the organ and the piano, and directing the choir and music teams. As a private studio teacher, Karen has been active as an educator for the last 30 years. Her studio includes beginners, intermediates, senior students and adults. She has taught piano, voice, theory and organ. Karen considers it an honour to continue to be a music mentor for many students.
